Overview

The Dimension SST 1200es 3D printer uses ABS plastic (what LEGO bricks are made of) and a proprietary support material to build durable and accurate parts. The machine has a build envelope of 10”x10”x12” (X x Y x Z). Because the machine prints layer by layer, it is capable of producing complex and organic shapes, as well as linked and fully assembled parts, such as chains, gear-boxes, curved tubes and bottles – essentially any form you can imagine or design. One down-side to this is that the layer-based process will cause curves which do not lay flat in the X-Y plane to be somewhat stepped or ridged.
 

To request contract Dimension printing services:

  • Submit your design by filling out the quote form. We have specific file guidelines listed below in the File Setup section.
  • We will estimate job setup and material costs and will then provide a quote for your approval.
  • Upon approval, we will run the job and will notify you when the product is ready for pickup. 
 

Please include the following in your quote request:

  • A file containing the geometry to be printed, at 1:1 scale.
  • The desired resolution for the vertical layering along with the interior fill type (see below for an explanation of these terms);
  • Your desired material color (see below for options).
  • The date the parts are needed by - typical job turnaround is 2-3 business days depending on the job size, complexity and post-processing time. 

 

Materials

The Dimension SST 1200es employs a proprietary type of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) – a high-performance engineering thermoplastic – called ABSplus to build your object. Finished items are very durable, and can be sanded, painted, or even drilled. Colors available include:
 
  • Black
  • Gray
  • Nectarine (Orange)
  • Red
  • White
 
 

File Setup


Acceptable file formats

Files should be submitted as an STL (.stl), IGES (.igs), Rhinoceros 4 (.3dm), or SolidWorks part or assembly file (.SLDPRT, .SLDASM). 
 
If your file format is not listed, contact us for more information before simply converting from one format to another, as some formats are better than other and file conversion can introduce errors.
 

FDM Process and Printing Options

The Dimension SST 1200es uses a manufacturing process called Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), which builds the object by depositing thin layers of melted plastic and a sacrificial support material, essentially building the item from the ground up. While the process allows you to build objects of almost any conceivable shape, it also offers several options which affect the strength, density, and appearance of your object.
 
Vertical Resolution is the thickness of the layers of plastic that the machine deposits to build up your parts. The
 
Dimension SST 1200es is capable of two resolutions:
High resolution: .010 inch (.254 mm) Low resolution: .013 inch (.330 mm)
 
High resolution provides noticeably smoother vertical walls, and handles thin horizontal features better, but takes roughly 30% longer to complete a model.
 
Model Interior Fill is the pattern and density of material deposited within the interior of the object (the top and bottom of the parts will always be solid). The FDM process generally builds objects as a thin external skin with an interior that is filled with criss-crossing strands of plastic. The amount of air space between the strands in the fill can be varied in order to conserve material, reduce weight and allow the object to be built more quickly, or to make a fully dense and maximally strong part. 
 

The FDM process does have some limitations: 

Due to the layer-by-layer nature of the process, parts may have a tendency to break or separate along layers where the cross-sectional area of the layer is small. Please take this into account when considering your desired build orientation.
Thin surfaces at low angles relative to the vertical direction may not build correctly – for example, a thin knife blade laying on its side. 
Holes oriented perpendicular to the vertical direction will exhibit ridging around their circumference - on larger holes this is less of an issue, but when the holes are very small, it can be quite problematic and drilling should be considered as an alternative.

Post Processing

As the objects are printed, any overhangs or concavities in your objects will have water-soluble support material deposited beneath them to maintain separations and prevent deformation. Once the printing is complete, the support is removed by manually breaking off exterior supports, and dissolving away remaining and interior supports in a detergent bath. This process may take anywhere from a half hour to a full day or more, depending upon the complexity and size of your object. Pricing / Payment Terms

Pricing for Dimension 1200es 3D printing is determined by the amount of raw material used and the labor required for file preparation, job setup, and post-processing. The amount of material used will depend on the dimensions of the object, and your choice of interior fill. Very large and/or delicate objects may require significant labor in job setup and post-processing. The Job Setup / Post-Processing fees include verifying and processing your file, preparing the machine for the job, post-process cleanup, and any post-process surface finishing.
 
Pricing for 3D printed parts is based on print resolution (layer height) and the amount of material used, calculated in cubic inches.
