SUMMARY:Call for Entries: (un)made Gallery Show at NextFab - POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:Call for Entries for NextFab and SNAG’s first gallery call.\nNo entry fee.\nDeadline for submissions: April 10\, 2020.\nSubmit here: tinyurl.com/un-made \n\n*UPDATE: Due to the current situation surrounding COVID-19\, we have decided to postpone this event. Due to the level of interest\, we will be keeping this application open until the fall of 2020 for submissions. Please stay tuned for updates once we have more information. \nNextFab North Philadelphia\, alongside the annual Society of North American Goldsmiths conference (SNAG)\, invite artists and craftspeople to submit their recent work for an exciting open juried exhibition opportunity. Submissions are open to exhibit work of all media that utilizes sustainable\, upcycled and/or reclaimed material from artists in all stages of their careers. \nIn Elaine Scarry’s book\, The Body in Pain\, she speaks to the acts of ‘unmaking and making’. She argues an artist has the ability to change the world by bringing something new into it. She calls this a “fragment of world alteration”. She goes further to say that with collaboration\, these fragments become greater than themselves and can push forth to create a “complete reinvention of the world.” What this exhibition seeks to address is a certain making and unmaking: a reinvention of our own world through reuse and resuscitation. It is an exhibition of artists in a wide range of craft media creating something beautiful\, exciting\, and new from that which would otherwise be discarded. Alongside the notion of reused and ethically sourced material we seek to build a community of like-minded artists that may just come together to reinvent the world. \nThe location of this exhibition is in the gallery space of NextFab; a makerspace thriving on community and growth though a combination digital technologies and traditional tools in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. Newly partnered with The Resource Exchange\, a creative reuse center for artists and craftsmen\, we aim to create a culture of mindfulness toward where our materials come from and how we can make the most of what we already have. \n\nApplication materials:  \n\nArtist statement – PDF format labeled “lastname_firstname_statement”\nArtist bio – PDF format labeled “lastname_firstname_bio”\n5 images (with up to 2 detail shots each) – 300 DPI or higher jpeg or tiff format labeled “lastname_firstname_title” and “lastname_firstname_title_detaiI” where applicable\n\nSubmit here: tinyurl.com/un-made \nDeadline for submissions: April 10\, 2020\nNotification to selected artists: April 15\, 2020\nExhibition: May 21\, 2020- July 21\, 2020\nExhibition Opening: May 21: 5PM – 9PM

SUMMARY:Manufacturing 101 with DVIRC: Virtual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Manufacturing 101 is an opportunity to gain insights into working with manufacturers. The presentation will discuss design for manufacturing\, understanding supply chain development\, and manufacturing practices. We will cover design and manufacturing jargon\, how to determine best strategies for early production and scaled production\, and share resources to help find regional manufacturing capabilities. By attending the presentation you will be given the opportunity to help define new supply chain development services. \nGuest speaker Andrew Dahlgren has been working with Delaware Valley Industrial Resource Center (DVIRC) on the Manufacturing Access Project to develop new strategies to connect designers\, makers\, and entrepreneurs to regional manufacturers. Over the past two years they have learned about the growing number of entrepreneurs in the region and their desire to source regional manufacturing capabilities. In parallel they have identified many barriers that have prevented entrepreneurs and manufacturers from working together. Manufacturing 101 is their first step to addressing and removing those barriers. \n\nRegister for this virtual conference below.
