Technical Supervisor and Jewelry Instructor

NextFab is seeking an engaging, talented, and enthusiastic Technical Supervisor and Jewelry Instructor. NextFab is a community makerspace and business accelerator. We provide access to machinery, education, membership, community, events, rental space, and professional services to enable innovators to turn ideas into products and products into businesses. We are looking for candidates for the position who feel passionate about supporting the mission and work of our organization and our customers. 

This position is two-fold: partially focusing on the upkeep and maintenance of our different departments, but strongly focused on the jewelry department’s maintenance and curriculum. The Technical Supervisor is primarily responsible for supporting NextFab members of all skill levels, maintaining the safety of the shop and equipment, and teaching classes. Jewelry skills developed through personal pursuits, education, or professional experience are required. Metalworking, woodworking, and familiarity with digital design are preferred secondary skills. Must be willing to learn throughout departments to provide support to the team and the members we serve.

There is a high level of flexibility in the job functions, and individuals are allowed and expected to work autonomously and contribute ideas and effort as business needs and their skills allow. It is a fast-paced environment, and staff are expected to perform at a high level from the beginning, so the candidate will need to find motivation in solving problems on a daily basis. Weekend and evening hours are required.

Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work:

  • This is a full-time, on-site position (30 to 40 hours/week).
  • Non-exempt / hourly position.
  • Evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Work is to be performed on site at our North Philadelphia location.
  • Pay rate: $18-21/ hr, based upon experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 25-50 pounds at times.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and sitting in a shop environment.
  • Must have a full range of physical motion as required to properly operate manual and electric power tools.

Requirements:

Technical Supervision

  • Provide technical assistance, safety supervision, teaching, and informal instruction to NextFab members in a friendly and courteous manner
  • Know and enforce NextFab safety, courtesy, and access policies
  • Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and safe functionality of the shop and tools
  • Develop tutorial projects to promote self-paced learning by members
  • Develop and maintain a high level of competence with jewelry shop tools and processes
  • Develop and maintain basic competence with the tools and processes of other NextFab departments
  • Occasional other duties as requested by management

Jewelry Department Support, Instruction, and Content Creation

  • Studio Maintenance and Upkeep
    • Resale and consumables quarterly inventory
    • Tool refinishing and equipment maintenance
  • Instruction through Classes and Private Training
    • Confidence with Jewelry skills and willingness to learn additional processes
    • Confidence or willingness to learn metal and wood skills, as well as digital design
  • Support class creation and technical content development.
    • Support the design and delivery of instructional materials
    • Assist in the review, evaluation, and update of content as needed

Desirable Skills:

  • 3+ years of employment experience in jewelry production and fabrication
  • Ability to break down difficult processes into achievable tasks
  • Ability to present information effectively for the member’s skill level
  • Technical knowledge around techniques in jewelry fundamentals, soldering, stonesetting, hydraulic press operation, and casting.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Maintain shop upkeep, organization, tooling, equipment, and cleanliness
  • Ability to work in a customer-facing shop environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication experience, both written and oral
  • Ability to document processes through images and text for content development
