Prototyping Lab Manager

NextFab is seeking a Prototyping Lab Manager (“Lab Manager”) to join our Philadelphia team. This role will be located at the product prototyping facilities of a large corporate client (the “Client Lab”), providing physical part design, prototyping/model building, consulting, and related services to the client’s product development teams. The role will also entail technical training and support to designated lab users, and equipment management to enable on-site innovation. The Client Lab is located in Center City Philadelphia.

Though a full member of the NextFab team, the Lab Manager will work at the Client Lab, providing equipment training and facility safety certifications, guiding and engaging with the client’s employees around the Client Lab’s capabilities, answering inquiries, consulting on and producing prototypes, and maintaining equipment.  It is a complex and challenging role given the diversity of location capabilities and the independence of the role. As the sole NextFab representative on-site, a high level of competency across a spectrum of design and manufacturing technologies, skills in training and safety awareness, as well as strong customer engagement and communication skills are necessary. Candidates should have experience handling sensitive information with discretion. You must be self-motivated, a quick learner, and a great communicator.

The Client Lab is supported by our Philadelphia headquarters, with regular coordination with the client’s organization, but day-to-day operations are the responsibility of the Lab Manager, so there is a high level of variability in the job functions, and individuals are expected to work autonomously. It is a fast-paced environment, and staff is expected to perform at a high level from the beginning, so candidates should find motivation in solving problems on a daily basis.

The Lab Manager will report to the President of NextFab.

Requirements:

  • Routine maintenance of Client Lab and equipment, including coordinating with partner organization representatives for 3rd party maintenance services
  • Instruction of Client Lab users in safe use of facilities and equipment
  • Consultation with Client personnel on product design, prototyping, and manufacturing
  • Design and / or fabrication of Client-approved projects, including engaging NextFab resources and/or other vendors as needed and as approved by Client representatives
  • Host tours of the Client Lab for VIP visitors
  • Maintain data and report on key operational metrics for Client Lab
  • Outreach activities within Client organization to promote the Client Lab
  • Maintain materials and small tools / consumables inventory
  • Work collaboratively with President, CFO, Client organization Managers to set the Client Lab’s strategic goals
  • Ongoing development of professional and technical knowledge relevant to NextFab’s mission and the needs of the Client Lab and Client organization stakeholders.
  • Develop SOP’s for routine activities
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and legal work environment in the Client Lab
  • Support ongoing training of Substitute Client Lab Manager(s) (Other NextFab Personnel as determined by NextFab and Comcast Manager)
  • Other duties as assigned Hours as reasonably determined by Client

Desirable Skills:

  • 3+ years professional experience in product design, prototyping / model building
  • Strong Computer Aided Design skills - creating models from scratch for prototyping, interpreting design intent in provided models, modifying provided models for prototyping without loss of design intent
  • SolidWorks skills required (SolidWorks surfacing a plus)
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting a variety of 3D printing equipment (experience with Stratasys / Objet equipment a plus)
  • Experience with manual machining processes
  • Experience programming and operating CNC milling equipment (some 2.5D-3D CAM experience required; experience with HSM Works or PowerMill, a plus)
  • Experience with Brother CNC equipment, a plus
  • Experience with electronics a plus (familiarity with electronics workbench equipment and safety hand soldering, rework, PCB assembly)
  • Experience with “looks like” / aesthetic model building (Foam / plastic forming / carving Surface preparation/ Spray finishing)
  • Resin casting experience, a plus
  • Strong problem solving and time management capabilities
  • Eagerness and ability to learn and teach new, innovative technologies
  • Ability to work independently and entrepreneurially within a larger organization
  • Maintain lab upkeep, organization, tooling, equipment and cleanliness

Requirements:

  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date human resource files, records, and documentation.
  • Answers frequently asked questions from applicants and employees relative to standard policies, benefits, etc.; refers more complex questions to the HR Manager. 
  • Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of human resource files and records.
  • Performs background screenings as per regulatory requirements.
  • Responds to external requests for employee information as appropriate.
  • Performs periodic audits of HR files and records to ensure that all required documents are collected and filed appropriately.
  • Provides clerical support to the HR department.
  • May assist with onboarding new employees as well as entering employee information into HRIS and answering employee questions.
  • Acts as a liaison between the organization and external benefits providers and vendors, which may include health, disability, and retirement plan providers.

Electronics Department Technical Supervisor (South Philadelphia)

NextFab is seeking an engaging, talented, and enthusiastic people-person for our Electronics Department Technical Supervisor position. NextFab is a collaborative makerspace for creators of any skill level or interest. The Electronics Department Technical Supervisor leads the department toward meeting its goals in member engagement, education and satisfaction.

This role will be the subject matter expert in electronics for the South Philly location but will support multiple departments and our planned business accelerator program as part of a small team. Candidates should have direct experience in multiple areas of design and fabrication, including one or more of:

  • 3D Computer-Aided Design (SolidWorks, Rhinoceros preferred)
  • Graphic design and illustration (Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop preferred)
  • Woodworking
  • CNC routing
  • 3D Printing
  • 3D Scanning
  • Large-format 2D printing (Roland vinyl print-cut systems preferred)

Schedule

  • 40 hours/week. Hours include evenings and weekends.

Requirements:

  • Report to the Location Manager
  • Support NextFab’s Electronics department, directing the tools and growth trajectory
  • Define standards for the maintenance of the department and its physical assets
  • Ensure that department capabilities are in tune with the state of the art of the field
  • Teach Electronics department classes and courses in support of education services and with the assistance of other instructors
  • Continually improve competence of self and staff with Electronics departments tools and processes
  • Develop and maintain basic competence with tools and processes of other NextFab departments
  • Occasionally support other needs of the company as skills and needs dictate

  • Recommended experience with Microcontroller Programming (e.g. Arduino)
