Electronics Department Technical Supervisor (Wilmington)

NextFab is seeking an engaging, talented, and enthusiastic people-person for our Electronics Department Technical Supervisor position. NextFab is a collaborative makerspace for creators of any skill level or interest. The Electronics Department Technical Supervisor leads the department toward meeting its goals in member engagement, education and satisfaction.This role will be the subject matter expert in electronics for the Wilmington location, but will support multiple departments and our planned business accelerator program as part of a small team, reporting directly to the Location Manager. Schedule is 40 hours / week. Hours include evenings and weekends. Occasional attendance at events outside of normal work hours.

Requirements:

  • Direct experience in multiple areas of design and fabrication, including one or more of the following: 3D Computer Aided Design (SolidWorks, Rhinoceros preferred), Graphic design and illustration (Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop preferred), Woodworking, CNC routing, 3D Printing, 3D Scanning, Large format 2D printing (Roland vinyl print-cut systems preferred), Laser cutting.
  • Lead NextFab’s Electronics department, directing the tools and growth trajectory.
  • Define standards for the maintenance of the department and its physical assets.
  • Ensure that department capabilities are in tune with the state of the art of the field.
  • Teach Electronics department classes and courses in support of education services and with the assistance of other instructors.
  • Continually improve competence of self and staff with Electronics departments tools and processes.
  • Develop and maintain basic competence with tools and processes of other NextFab departments.
  • Occasionally support other needs of the company as skills and needs dictate.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with Microcontroller Programming (e.g. Arduino).
  • Experience with PCB Design and Layout (e.g. AutoDesk Eagle).
  • Experience with basic circuit design, prototyping, troubleshooting (e.g. Breadboarding circuits).

Part Time Technical Supervisor: Wood Shop & Metal Shop

NextFab is seeking an engaging and enthusiastic technical team member. This person will oversee and instruct members in the facility, ensuring that machinery and equipment is used safely, in accordance with policies. NextFab is a network of collaborative makerspaces for creators of any skill level or interest. We provide access to machinery, education, membership, community, events, and professional services for anything you want to fabricate. By combining digital technology with traditional tools, we’re finding cutting-edge ways to make things, solve problems, and learn by doing.

We are looking for candidates for the position who feel passionate about supporting the mission and work of our organization and our customers.

This is a part-time position (15-30 hours / week). Evening and weekend hours may be required.

Requirements:

  • Provide technical assistance, safety supervision, teaching and informal instruction to NextFab members in a friendly and courteous manner
  • Know and enforce NextFab safety, courtesy, and access policies
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safe functionality of shop and tools
  • Develop tutorial projects to promote self-paced learning by members
  • Develop and maintain a high level of competence with wood and metal shop tools and processes
  • Develop and maintain basic competence with tools and processes of other NextFab departments
  • Occasional other duties as requested by management

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience working in a technical environment
  • Experience with woodworking or metalworking is required
  • CNC experience is a plus
  • Strong problem solving skills

Laser / 2D /3D Department Manager

NextFab is seeking an engaging, talented, and enthusiastic people-person for our Laser/3D/ 2D Department Manager position. NextFab is a collaborative makerspace for creators of any skill level or interest. We provide access to machinery, education, membership, community, events, and professional services for anything you want to fabricate. By combining digital technology with traditional tools, we’re finding cutting-edge ways to make things, solve problems, and learn by doing. We are looking for candidates who feel passionate about supporting the mission and work of our organization and our customers.

The Department Manager is primarily responsible for supporting NextFab members of all skill levels in the shop, maintaining the safety of the shop and equipment and teaching classes. Demonstrated experience in either 3D printing or lasers and design knowledge, through education or professional experience, are required. The Department Manager will also work with the team on contract projects, to support events and private training, and will be cross-trained to provide support in other areas of the facility.

There is a high level of flexibility in the job functions, and individuals are allowed and expected to work autonomously and contribute ideas and effort as business needs and their skills allow. It is a fast paced environment, and staff are expected to perform at a high level from the beginning, so the candidate will need to find motivation in solving problems on a daily basis. Weekend and evening hours are required.

Requirements:

  • Experience with 3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing, Large format printing (vinyl print-cut and/or large format ink-jet), Laser cutting and engraving
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, SolidWorks or Rhino
  • Ability to teach to a diverse range of ages/skills
  • Knowledge of trends and emerging technologies in digital fabrication and printing
  • Eagerness and ability to master new technologies
  • Ability to work independently
  • Maintain, upkeep and organize shop, tooling, equipment and environment
  • Customer service experience in a fast paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Experience managing people is a plus, but not required.
