This one-day, open-to-the-public workshop offers an introductory experience with CAD/CAM software and the operation of a modern CNC machine. You will gain knowledge through the creation of a customizable ornament shape, designed during the class session. Through this project, you will experience how ideas are translated through CAD (computer-aided design), learn the basics of CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) to program for the CNC machine, and then watch the ShopBot CNC router make your design come to life! Complete your custom ornaments with a little hand sanding and simple finish coating.
Day One:
Demonstrate the image tracing and vector drawing tools, as well as the 2D toolpath operations in V-Carve PRO. Each student will briefly design a snowflake, or other holiday-themed ornament, which the instructor will demonstrate toolpathing on. We will then cut out everyone’s ornaments on the ShopBot CNC machine. Students will get to hand sand their pieces if needed, and apply a fast dry clear coat finish.
