Learn the ins and outs of the software and design programs we utilize to take traditional manufacturing disciplines to the next level. Intro courses in Rhino, Adobe Illustrator, and VCarve will give you the basis of computer-aided design (CAD) principles. CAD programs are incorporated into nearly every department here at NextFab, so with a basic understanding of how the software works, you can create anything you can dream up.

From vector graphics to 3D modeling, our makerspace provides expert instruction and professional tools to help you take your projects from sketch to production-ready. Our staff are experienced in software used for CNC machining, laser cutting, woodworking design, jewelry design, and 3D printing workflows.
Members rely on this department to plan projects, prepare fabrication-ready files, and confidently navigate programs used throughout the shop – from beginner-friendly tools like Tinkercad to advanced CAD modeling.
Between our classes, equipment, staff, and community, NextFab provides everything you need to build strong digital design foundations.
Members gain access to a powerful suite of design tools after completing the required classes or demonstrating proficiency. Software taught in this department includes:
While we do not offer full AutoCAD or SolidWorks certification programs on-site, many members use their skills from our core classes to transition into AutoCAD classes, SolidWorks training, or more advanced CAD workflows.
Our Design Software classes teach you the essential digital skills needed to create and prepare files for fabrication.
Learn the foundational tools in Adobe Illustrator I for vector graphics, digital illustration, and layout design. Perfect for laser cutting, vinyl printing, and branding. Gain a solid introduction to 3D modeling through our Rhinoceros I class. You’ll create geometries, work with surfaces, and prepare models for CNC machining, 3D prints, and laser cutting. Explore how to create toolpaths, use tool libraries, understand feed rates, set registration points, and prepare clean files for CNC routing in VCarve I & VCarve II classes.
These classes build confidence, reduce fabrication errors, and ensure you can successfully operate equipment across the makerspace.
Our community uses design software for an incredibly wide range of projects, including:
