About the Course

In this two-part course, explore the specifics of using Vetric Aspire software to operate the Roland MDX 540, a versatile 3-axis CNC milling machine capable of fine detail and precision work. Learn how to load, initialize, and safely run the machine, then design a custom wooden jewelry pendant or belt buckle in Aspire, to be cut and produced during the second half of class.  The Roland MDX CNC router will cut low and high-density urethane foams, machinable resins and waxes, soft and hardwoods, plastics (abs, Delrin, acrylic, polypropylene), engineered wood products like MDF, and soft metals such as aluminum and brass. Providing a 15” x 15” cutting area, with a maximum loadable workpiece on rotary: 7.0” (diameter) x 14.6” (length). NOTE: upon completion of the class, members will receive 1 hour of complimentary machine time, to assist in tooling setup for their first project.
  1. Members are encouraged to start learning and utilizing Aspire to do 3D carving
  2. Flip milling
  3. Installation of Rotary Attachment and operation using DeskProto
  4. Advanced hold-downs techniques
    1. Installation and tramming of vice for smaller items
    2. Using jigs for multiple pieces 
    3. Setting up for micro precision milling, tips, and tricks
