TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I am Susan Murphy, owner and founder of Jawnaments.com, Philly’s hyper-local ornament company.  I teach full-time undergrad business at the University of Delaware and previously owned Viv Pickle Custom Handbags in Old City (where I retired in the mid-2010s). I’m a late bloomer at NextFab— but I love the creative and supportive vibe there.

WHAT DO YOU MAKE/ WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
I started Jawnaments in my kitchen in 2017 and have since moved production to NextFab— making use of the laser lab and wood shop.  Each Jawnament is made from photos I’ve taken or original art and is laser cut from birch wood. I’ve evolved the collection from 4 to 14 in 2019– with a bunch more planned for 2020! Since NextFab is closed due to COVID-19, I’ve been keeping busy at home with my Fishtown Free Mask Project. I’ve been sewing FREE face masks for neighbors in Fishtown and the Riverwards and clipping them to the fence in front of my house every few days. To date, I’ve given away over 250 masks and plan to make many more! I’m also working on ideas for new 2020 Jawnaments and getting artwork prepped for fabrication later this summer. And I’m grading lots of exams, quizzes, and papers too.

WHAT’S THE HARDEST PART?
Keeping up with demand! I’m constantly considering how to improve productivity so I can fulfill orders quickly during the holidays. This year I hope to make a bunch of inventory in advance and streamline the packaging process so I can mail orders fast!

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?
I have many ideas for new Jawnaments— but have been too busy to bring them to market!  This year I plan to make the expansion happen– and am even considering creating hyper-local ornaments for other cities across the country.  Time to spread some brotherly Jawn to the rest of the US.
