About the Course

This two-day course bridges the traditional craft of upholstery with woodworking and modern CNC technology. You will gain knowledge through the creation of a customizable stool, designed by our in-house CNC master. Through this project, you will learn how to translate ideas into CAD (computer-aided design), learn the basic concepts of CAM (computer-aided manufacturing), and cut the finalized file on our CNC ShopBot in the woodshop. Complete your custom stool with a tufted cushion using the traditional methods and tools of upholstery. All materials will be provided at your workshop cost.

Upcoming Dates:
Sunday, June 2nd and Sunday, June 9th

Day One:

On the first day of this workshop, you’ll get the chance to work hands-on in the woodshop, and learn about design using the ShopBot CNC router. We’ll discuss how to set up and run the machine and iterating how to turn flat files into functional furniture. Our instructor will review CAD and CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) as well as design decisions when it comes to flatpack furniture. By the end of the day, each student will have completed the woodshop portion by customizing aspects of the stool and finish sanding all the parts.

Day Two:

On the second day of this workshop, you’ll head to the textiles studio, where we’ll discuss material selection when determining the cushion to add to your stool. Pick your fabric, and learn how to staple and finish your stool with covered buttons. Connect your finished cushion to the seat, and walk out of this workshop with a finished wooden stool.
